What is Tombolio for?
Calling on a student without playing favorites, choosing who presents at the team meeting, picking the winners of a social media giveaway, deciding on tonight’s movie: whenever a decision has to be made at random and accepted by everyone, a visible, verifiable draw saves the argument.
The wheel is best when you want people to watch the draw, in class or over screen share. The name picker is faster for drawing several winners from a long list. The number generator is there whenever you need one or more whole numbers between two limits.
Randomness without bias
Every draw uses your browser’s cryptographic generator (crypto.getRandomValues), with rejection sampling to remove modulo bias: each entry has exactly the same probability of coming up.
On the wheel, the winner is picked before the animation starts. Speed, sound and full screen have no effect on the result.
Your lists stay with you
No list is ever sent to a server. Your entries are saved in your browser for your next visit, and you can clear them at any time.
The share link puts the list after the # sign of the address, and that part is not sent to the server when the page loads. The site is funded by advertising and never asks you to sign up.
